💜 Student Voice. Student Leadership. Student Inspiration. 💜

Mrs. Sara Furrow’s fifth grade class at Woodhaven Upper Elementary recently took on a powerful, student-led project after being asked to select an impactful and positive African American individual to highlight.

After thoughtful discussion and connecting their classroom readings about the Olympics to the excitement surrounding the Winter Games, students chose Simone Biles. While she’s known around the world for her incredible accomplishments in gymnastics, these fifth graders were especially inspired by her courage in advocating for mental health.

Students filled their classroom door with meaningful quotes from Simone Biles, highlighting her strength, resilience, and message about prioritizing mental well-being. Their goal? To inspire others to speak up, seek support, and advocate for their own mental health.

What makes this project even more special — it was 100% student-led. From the decision-making and brainstorming to designing and creating the display, every step was powered by teamwork and student voice.

Way to go, Mrs. Furrow’s class! You’re showing us that leadership, compassion, and advocacy can start at any age. 🌟

📚 Big news for our littlest learners!
Woodhaven-Brownstown School District proudly participates in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, providing FREE, high-quality books every month to children from birth to age 5 who live in the district.

New, groundbreaking research - the largest shared book reading study ever - shows that children enrolled in Imagination Library have stronger early literacy skills, are more interested in books, and are read to more often at home than children not in the program. By putting books directly into families’ homes during the most critical years of brain development, Imagination Library helps build a lifelong love of reading and sets children up for long-term success. 💜

📖 Enrollment is free for WBSD families with children ages birth–5!
