In a sport often defined by speed, intensity, and competition, the Woodhaven High School coed lacrosse team has proven that character, integrity, and respect are just as important as any goal scored. The team has been honored with the 2025 Michigan Lacrosse Officials Association (MichLOA) Sportsmanship Award, a prestigious recognition that goes beyond the scoreboard to highlight the heart of the game.
Since 2007, MichLOA has presented this award to boys’ high school lacrosse programs that exemplify the highest levels of sportsmanship throughout the season. It is not given lightly. Recipients are chosen based on nominations submitted by lacrosse officials from across the state—individuals who witness first-hand the conduct of teams, coaches, and players on the field.
The MichLOA Sportsmanship Award acknowledges the teams that uphold the true spirit of the game: playing hard, playing fair, and showing respect to teammates, opponents, coaches, and officials alike. Woodhaven’s 2025 squad stood out among many for consistently demonstrating these values, regardless of the score or the stakes.
“Too often, success in sports is measured only by wins and losses,” said the letter from MichLOA. “But sportsmanship - how you treat others, how you carry yourself in victory and defeat - is just as vital. Woodhaven showed that the pursuit of excellence and the commitment to fairness and character are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they’re the foundation of long-term success.”
Athletic Director Keith Christnagel and team leadership received the congratulatory letter from MichLOA this spring, expressing appreciation for the team’s efforts to promote good sportsmanship. “Your efforts to promote good sportsmanship in the game of lacrosse are much appreciated and do not go unnoticed,” the letter read.
Head Coach Michael Cleary credited the players for fostering a team culture centered on mutual respect and accountability.
“Our team motto is ‘count on me,’ and it really stems from being accountable for yourself first and then relying on your teammates, coaches, and families,” Cleary said. “I always tell our kids to respect the game and it will respect you back. We've done a really nice job building a positive experience with lacrosse here at Woodhaven.”
Woodhaven High School is proud of its lacrosse team for earning this recognition and representing the Warrior Way on and off the field. This honor reinforces the district’s commitment to excellence, not just in athletics, but in character and community.
