Gudith Elementary second grade teacher Carol Cash started her week expecting a typical Monday - reading with her students, guiding small groups, and doing all the things she loves most about teaching. Instead, she received a surprise that left her speechless.
On Monday morning, 100.3 WNIC’s Jay Towers Show announced that Mrs. Cash had been selected as their Teacher of the Week, after a parent from her class sent in a heartfelt nomination. Carol had no idea this nomination was submitted.
Then, on Thursday, Principal Mr. Martin called her down to the office. When she walked in, she was met by Allison from the Jay Towers Show, who presented her with a plaque and shared the news in person.
“I was surprised,” Cash said. “It was very emotional. It was such a kind thing to do.”
“Carol is a very kind and dedicated teacher,” said Tom Martin, Principal, Gudith Elementary School. “I am not surprised that her students & parents nominated her for this special honor.”
Mrs. Cash has been teaching for over 25 years, spending her career with Woodhaven-Brownstown School District, primarily in first and second grades. For her, the joy of teaching goes far beyond academics.
“It’s really wanting my kids to just want to come to school and love being in my classroom,” she said. “We aren’t just teachers - we wear many hats for our students. If I’ve accomplished making them feel safe, loved, and excited to learn, then I’m good.”
She shared that her goal is to help students grow not just as learners, but as people. “The academics matter, but you really want them to grow up to be good citizens. We spend a lot of hours together - we do become a family.”
When asked what the recognition meant to her, she smiled and said, “It was a bright piece of my day to be recognized. I love my building and my team.”
Congratulations, Mrs. Cash - your dedication shines, and your Gudith family couldn’t be prouder.
