Dive into Shark Week with these five fascinating facts that highlight the incredible nature and importance of sharks in our oceans. Ancient Predators: Sharks have been swimming in the oceans for over 400 million years, which means they have been around longer than dinosaurs. Their evolutionary success is due to their adaptability and hunting skills. Diverse Species: There are over 500 known species of sharks, ranging from the tiny dwarf lanternshark, which is only about 8 inches long, to the massive whale shark, which can grow up to 40 feet or more. Incredible Senses: Sharks have exceptional senses. They can detect a single drop of blood in an Olympic-sized swimming pool and can sense electrical fields produced by other animals using special organs called ampullae of Lorenzini. Regenerating Teeth: Sharks continuously lose and replace their teeth throughout their lives. A single shark can go through tens of thousands of teeth in its lifetime, with some species losing teeth every week. Vital to Ecosystems: Sharks play a crucial role in maintaining the health of marine ecosystems. As apex predators, they help regulate the populations of other marine species, ensuring a balanced and healthy ocean environment. We love summer because it means warmer weather and more free time to have fun! When taking a break from the sun, or as a part of a morning or evening routine, we recommend integrating reading! Reading for just 30 minutes each day will help students stay on track and be ready to hit the ground running when the school year begins in September.

Planning a Vacation or Staycation this summer? Both are a great opportunity to slip in some fun lessons without your students even knowing! Vacation - make vacation a lesson! Involve students in the packing and preparation process like making a list of things they’ll need. Encourage students to keep a journal about their experiences. They can compare and contrast things when they arrive at their destination. Staycation - backyard camping helps with teaching outdoor skills. Building a “camp” or picnic indoors is an opportunity for students to help out, make lists, and discuss things you will need for your adventure. Plan a trip to the park and talk about observations while you’re at the park. Park playdates are an opportunity to help children connect with others and work on their social skills and socialization.
