This October, Woodhaven-Brownstown School District schools are joining together for An Apple for Ryan, an annual non-perishable food collection benefiting local Downriver food pantries.

The food drive honors the memory of Ryan Sergent, whose life was unexpectedly cut short in 1997 while he was a senior at Flat Rock High School. Ryan’s commitment to helping others continues through the work of the “Ryan’s Friends” organization, which hosts the annual food drive in his memory.

October is a critical time for local food pantries. After a long summer, pantry shelves are often running low, and the next major influx of donations may not arrive until the Thanksgiving holiday season. Community support helps ensure families experiencing food insecurity have access to the food they need.

From October 12–23, 2026, all WBSD schools will collect non-perishable, kid-friendly food items to help replenish local food pantry shelves. Donations can be dropped off at participating school locations through Friday, October 23.

Volunteers will deliver the collected donations to local food pantries on Saturday, October 24, with a goal of filling three buses with food and volunteers. Those interested in helping with the delivery can meet at the Woodhaven Support Service Building at 8 a.m., returning around noon. To reserve a spot, text the Woodhaven Kiwanis Club at 734-771-0552.

Ryan’s mother, Evelyn Sergent-Kosowski, spent her entire career teaching fifth grade at Bates School, making this effort especially meaningful to the WBSD community.

Through An Apple for Ryan, WBSD students, families and staff have an opportunity to honor Ryan’s legacy by helping neighbors in need. Every donation makes a difference, and together, our school community can help bring hope and support to families throughout Downriver.
