The Goonies Robotics Camp continues to spark creativity, curiosity, and confidence in the next generation of engineers!

Started several years ago as a recruitment initiative, the camp was created to introduce students to the exciting world of robotics — from learning how to safely use tools to building, programming, and competing with a robot of their own. Over time, it has become a key part of growing and strengthening our robotics program. In fact, many members of the high school Goon Squad and current Goonies first discovered their passion for robotics through this very camp.

Led by advisors Desiderio Villalobos and Chris Sims, the camp operates as a student-led “mini-season.” Current Goonies members take the lead in designing an original game challenge and mentoring campers through the entire engineering design process. From brainstorming ideas and sketching designs to building, testing, coding, and competing, campers experience what a real robotics season feels like — all in a supportive and fun environment.

This year’s creative challenge had students “saving ducks.” Teams designed and built robots capable of removing rubber ducks from a platform and dispensing them into a bucket. The room was filled with problem-solving, teamwork, perseverance, and plenty of excitement as campers refined their designs and prepared for competition day.

A special thank you goes to co-coach Chris Sims, who designed custom “robot kits” to streamline the building process and allow students to focus on innovation and strategy. His behind-the-scenes preparation has been instrumental in making the camp run smoothly and successfully. We’re also grateful to Cassie Sims for capturing so many fantastic moments in the camp photo album.

The Goonies Robotics Camp is more than just building robots — it’s about building leaders. Watching current students mentor younger campers and seeing those campers light up when their robot completes its challenge is what it’s all about.

We can’t wait to see where their robotics journey takes them next! 💡🚀
