The Woodhaven-Brownstown School District celebrated the transformation of Wegienka Elementary School Tuesday evening, October 27, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony recognizing the extensive renovations and improvements made possible through the district’s voter-approved 2021 Bond Program.
District administration, Board of Education members, staff, students, families and Brownstown Township administration joined together for the celebration. The event also featured a special performance by Wegienka’s fourth-grade drummers, adding to the excitement as the school community marked this milestone.
The improvements at Wegienka were designed to modernize the building, enhance learning spaces and create a more welcoming environment for students and staff.
“There is something special about opening the doors to a learning environment designed with students in mind,” said Superintendent Matthew Salah. “Our goal is to ensure that every child who walks into Wegienka feels welcomed, supported, and excited to learn. This project reflects our commitment to providing our students with the opportunities and environments they deserve.”
“Great things happen when a community comes together with a shared belief in the power of education,” said Wegienka Elementary School Principal Michelle Briegel. “Thank you to our wonderful community for supporting our students, our school, and the future of our Wildcats. We are so grateful to be part of a community that believes in making great things happen for kids!”
Modern Spaces for Learning and Discovery
Throughout Wegienka Elementary, new flooring and fresh paint have refreshed the building, creating brighter, updated spaces for students and staff.
The cafeteria received a complete renovation, including new furniture and updated finishes. The gymnasium was also renovated, enhancing the space used for physical education and school activities.
One of the standout transformations is the school’s Learning Commons, which has been redesigned as a modern, inviting space for reading, collaboration and exploration. Unique design elements, including harvested real trees, bring a natural feel to the learning environment.
The media center also received new furniture and skylights, allowing additional natural light to enter the space.
Another exciting addition is Wegienka’s new SMART Lab, which provides students with opportunities for hands-on learning, creativity, problem-solving and exploration through STEM-based activities.
Exterior improvements include a new parking lot and walking path, enhancing accessibility, improving pedestrian circulation and creating a more functional school campus.
Together, these upgrades provide students and staff with updated spaces designed to support learning, collaboration and creativity for years to come.
Continuing the District’s Investment in Its Schools
Wegienka’s ribbon cutting follows celebrations at Bates and Gudith elementary schools in September, where the district showcased major renovations and additions completed through the 2021 Bond Program.
Construction is also currently underway at Erving and Yake elementary schools, with projects continuing through 2027 as WBSD moves forward with its commitment to modernizing school facilities across the district.
The Woodhaven-Brownstown School District extends its appreciation to the community, Board of Education, staff, construction partners and everyone who helped make the improvements at Wegienka possible.
The ribbon cutting marked more than the completion of a construction project. It celebrated a continued investment in students and the learning environments where they will grow, discover new interests and build their futures.
Through these improvements, WBSD continues its mission to Engage, Enlighten and Empower, creating spaces where students can learn and lead for tomorrow.
