The stage at Woodhaven High School will be busy this fall as the Woodhaven Theatre Company (WTC) prepares to present three very different productions, giving student performers the opportunity to explore everything from experimental theatre and classic American storytelling to over-the-top comedy.
Under the direction of teacher and WTC advisor Michael Clemons, students are currently rehearsing for Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind, Our Town and Peter Pan Goes Wrong. Each production offers a different theatrical experience for both the students involved and the audiences who come to see them.
“We have a really exciting fall season planned,” Clemons said. “These three productions are completely different from one another, and that gives our students the opportunity to experience and explore many different styles of theatre.”
Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind
The WTC's fall season opens with Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind, presented by the Woodhaven High School Play Production class.
This experimental and highly interactive production attempts to perform 30 plays in 60 minutes — and there will be a stopwatch to keep everyone on track.
The 38 student artists will perform the 30 short plays in an order chosen by the audience. With some audience members even becoming part of the action, no two performances are guaranteed to feel exactly the same.
The result is expected to be fast-paced, unpredictable and, fittingly, a little chaotic.
“Our students get to work with experimental theatre with lots of freedom,” Clemons said. “This will be controlled chaos, with an extra side of chaos.”
Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind will be presented Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. in the Woodhaven High School Black Box Theatre.
Our Town
Following the opening production, WTC students will take on one of the most celebrated works in American theatre: Thornton Wilder's Our Town.
Set in the fictional small town of Grover's Corners, Our Town explores the beauty found in ordinary, everyday moments — family, friendship, growing up, love and the simple routines that make up a life.
The production is a masterclass in simplicity and storytelling, asking audiences to slow down and recognize the significance of moments that can easily be taken for granted.
For Clemons, the production holds a particularly special place.
“This is my favorite play,” Clemons said. “There is not a more important play in existence.”
Our Town will be presented Nov. 5-7 at 7 p.m. in the Woodhaven High School Black Box Theatre.

Peter Pan Goes Wrong
The fall theatre season will conclude with a production that takes a beloved children's classic and turns it completely upside down.
Peter Pan Goes Wrong is a wildly hilarious, high-flying comedy that follows a fictional theatre company attempting to perform J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan — with just about everything that can go wrong seemingly going wrong.
From technical mishaps to backstage chaos, the production promises plenty of physical comedy, unexpected surprises and laughs for audiences of all ages.
“Audiences are in for a treat,” Clemons said. “Pure entertainment.”
Peter Pan Goes Wrong will be presented Nov. 19-21 at 7 p.m. in the Woodhaven High School Auditorium.

Three Productions, Three Completely Different Experiences
From the controlled chaos of Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind, to the quiet reflection of Our Town, to the outrageous comedy of Peter Pan Goes Wrong, the Woodhaven Theatre Company's fall lineup offers something distinctly different with each production.
For WTC students, the season is also an opportunity to challenge themselves, work together and experience the many different ways stories can come to life on stage.
For audiences, it is an invitation to support these talented student artists and experience three unique nights of theatre at Woodhaven High School.
