When third grader Eli Yharbrough's custom-designed flag was raised above Bates Elementary during the school's annual Flag Day celebration on Thursday, June 4, it marked a moment of pride, creativity, and school spirit. Eli's winning design, featuring a cool Bates Eagle sporting sunglasses, was selected to represent the school for the next year and now proudly flies outside the building.
Flag Day, officially observed on June 14, falls during summer break for students. To celebrate the holiday in a meaningful way before the school year ends, Bates Elementary hosts its own annual Flag Day ceremony. The tradition culminates with the raising of a new student-designed Bates flag that reflects school pride, creativity, and patriotism.
The project is a collaborative effort led by third grade teachers Tara Bacha, Daniele Michling, and Celine Farner, along with Principal Cherie Godfrey and District Literacy Coach Kathy Gray. The event is proudly supported by the Bates PTO and the Monguagon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
The learning begins in the classroom, where third grade students explore the history and symbolism of the American flag. This year, students participated in lessons and activities designed to help them understand the importance of flags as symbols of identity, unity, and pride.
After studying the American flag and its history, students were challenged to create their own flag design representing Bates Elementary. Each student also wrote an essay explaining the meaning behind their design and how it reflected the values and spirit of the school community. One finalist was selected from each third grade classroom.
"It was rewarding to see students engaged in their creations, all the while bursting with pride for their school," said Mrs. Michling.
Eli's design stood out for its creativity and school spirit. Featuring a confident Bates Eagle wearing sunglasses, the flag captured the fun, pride, and positive energy that students bring to Bates each day. His artwork was transformed into a full-size flag and raised during the ceremony as classmates, staff members, and family members looked on.
As part of the tradition, last year's winning flag, designed by Lyla Klapp, was respectfully retired and presented to her as a special keepsake to remember her year representing Bates Elementary.
Bates Elementary's Flag Day celebration is more than a lesson in patriotism—it's a lasting tribute to student voice, creativity, and pride in the school community. Through their artwork and writing, students leave their mark on Bates while learning about the history and values that unite them.
