Bates Elementary’s third-grade teachers, Mrs. Bacha, Mrs. Farner, and Mrs. Michling, brought a patriotic touch to their annual school Flag Contest this year by incorporating a special celebration of America’s upcoming 250th birthday on July 4, 2026.
In preparation for this historic milestone, Bates third graders spent two weeks learning about the United States Declaration of Independence, the document that formally declared the thirteen American colonies’ separation from the King of England and Great Britain. As part of their studies, all three classes participated in a read-aloud of The One and Only Declaration of Independence, which follows the remarkable journey of the Declaration as it traveled across the country through history.
Students also immersed themselves in colonial life by learning about and creating their own tricorn hats and mob caps, bringing history to life through hands-on activities.
The celebration continued on Friday, May 8, when special visitors from the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Monguagon Chapter Sharleen Wisler and Brenda Tomblin visited Bates Elementary to share demonstrations of colonial games, period clothing, and lessons on the symbolism of the American flag. Their visit provided students with a deeper appreciation of early American history and inspired the school’s annual Flag Contest.
As part of the contest, students are tasked with designing a flag that represents Bates Elementary and writing a short essay explaining how the elements of their design symbolize the school’s values and spirit. Entries were due May 14.
The classroom winners will be announced during a special school celebration featuring birthday cake in honor of America’s 250th birthday, along with flags for every student. Classroom winners will each receive $25 gift cards to Bares & Noble, generously provided by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Monguagon Chapter.
The event will conclude with the announcement of the overall school winner by Principal Cherie Godfrey. The winning student’s flag will proudly fly above Bates Elementary throughout the next school year, serving as a lasting symbol of creativity, patriotism, and school pride.
