When creativity leaves the classroom and enters the heart of the community, something special happens. That’s the inspiration behind a returning student art show at Francesca’s Brick Oven Pizzeria, this year featuring the work of students from Wegienka Elementary School.
From May 11 through May 31, Francesca’s Brick Oven Pizzeria in Brownstown will host a special student art exhibit showcasing colorful portrait artwork created by Wegienka Elementary students. The exhibit is the result of a continued partnership between WBSD art educators and Francesca Spano-Elawadi, owner of Francesca’s.
The collaboration highlights the importance of celebrating student creativity beyond the walls of the classroom while connecting schools with the local community.
“Providing students with opportunities to create and display their artwork in real-world settings is incredibly meaningful,” said Wegienka art teacher Leigh Anne Greene. “It allows students to feel proud of their work and helps them see how art can connect people throughout the community.”
The featured artwork includes vibrant and expressive portraits created by students throughout the school year. The exhibit’s colorful atmosphere reflects the energy and creativity of the young artists while bringing a festive feel to the restaurant space.
For Spano-Elawadi, partnering with local schools is a natural fit. As both a small business owner and parent of WBSD students, she values opportunities to support student expression.
“I think it’s wonderful to bring together the creativity of students and the creativity of small business,” she said. “There’s artistry in food, in community, and in visual art. Being able to showcase student work in our restaurant is something we’re very proud of.”
Spano-Elawadi believes creative opportunities help students build confidence and individuality.
“It’s important for kids to see that their ideas and creativity matter,” she said. “Art gives students a chance to express who they are.”
Since opening in July 2022, Francesca’s Brick Oven Pizzeria has become a popular Downriver destination known for its authentic Napoletana-style pizzas and community involvement. The restaurant has consistently supported local schools through fundraisers and partnerships, including the popular “Woodhaven Warrior” pizza inspired by school spirit.
Both Greene and Spano-Elawadi hope the annual art collaboration continues to grow in the years ahead.
“Our students create incredible work,” Greene said. “This exhibit gives them the opportunity to share their creativity with the community and feel celebrated for their talents.”
