This October, all Woodhaven-Brownstown School District schools are coming together for An Apple for Ryan, a food collection drive that honors the memory of Ryan Sergent, a Flat Rock High School senior whose life was tragically cut short in 1997.

Ryan was known for his commitment to helping others, a legacy that continues today through the annual food drive organized by “Ryan’s Friends.” Each fall, schools and community members donate non-perishable, kid-friendly food items to stock local food pantries at a critical time of year. Pantry shelves often run low in the fall months, as summer programs end and before the holiday donations begin.

From October 13–24, Woodhaven-Brownstown schools, in conjunction with Woodhaven Kiwanis, will collect donations to support families in need across the Downriver community. On Saturday, October 25, volunteers - including students, families, and community partners - will help deliver the donations, with a goal of filling three buses with food.

Ryan’s legacy lives on in the generosity of others, and WBSD is proud to take part in continuing his mission to make a difference. By participating in

An Apple for Ryan

, our students are not only giving food - they are giving hope.
