Sunshine, smiles, and a few flying lacrosse balls filled the air today at the Woodhaven-Brownstown School District’s Summer Meet Up! Students and families from across the district gathered at Civic Center Park in Woodhaven to catch up with friends, enjoy Kona Ice, and check in on their summer workbooks.

Today's special guests were members of the Woodhaven High School Lacrosse Team, who taught students about the sport and showed off their skills.

The Summer Meet Up series has become a beloved tradition for families.

“I like that it gets them motivated to learn over the summer and meet up with other students they don’t see in the summer,” said Lauren Portelli, a parent and teacher. “I love to get out of the house with playtime with friends. Learning new things over the summer like the mammals and Mad Science has been great!”

Lauren’s daughter chimed in, “I like the Kona Ice… and the prizes!” Her brother agreed, saying his favorite part was “the prizes.”

Jen Sievers, a mom of students at Yake Elementary, Woodhaven Upper Elementary, and Brownstown Middle School, has been coming since her 8th grade student was in elementary school. “The kids love them - and the Kona Ice - it motivates them to do it,” she shared.

Parent Natalie Swearingen appreciated the balance of fun and learning. “I love that they get to socialize with their friends. They love the books and doing all the projects and activities. Mad Science was a hit - and the sports too!”

Yake mom Sarah Ash added, “It’s just nice for the kids to see their friends,” while fellow parent Jackie Hagen said it best: “The atmosphere and the programs are fantastic.”

With just two sessions left, on July 30 from 6-8 p.m. and August 6 from 12-2 p.m., on families still have a chance to swing by, enjoy a cold Kona Ice, connect with friends, and keep that summer learning going strong. Don't miss it!
