WBSD Summer Learning Initiatives
Summer Programs Scheduled for WBSD Students
Though summer appears distant, the Woodhaven-Brownstown School District has taken proactive measures to plan summer programs and initiatives for students to bridge the summer learning gap. These initiatives are geared towards nurturing student skills and continuing learning in the warm summer months.
Elementary (K-4th Grade)
At the elementary level, each student in grades K-4 will be provided with a summer workbook which will provide weekly math, reading, science, social studies, and STEM activities.
Throughout the summer, there will be five check-in events, which will be opportunities for all elementary students to come together to celebrate summer. There will be opportunities for fun, prizes and treats like Kona Ice, bounce house, a petting farm and more. Students will have an opportunity to show their teachers the progress they’ve made within their summer workbook as well as meet up with friends.
Additionally, there will be PreK - 5th grade programming on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon beginning on June 16 to August 8. This program is by invitation only. Through a collaboration with the City of Woodhaven Parks and Recreation Department, 60 students at each elementary school receive free admission to the parks and recreation programming. The selected students not only participate in the Parks and Recreation activities five days a week, but they also receive academic support from our very own WBSD staff three days a week.
Emerging Kindergarten learners will have an opportunity to participate in Kinder Lit Labs, which are back for a third year. The Lit Lab is an eight-week program that aims to get our students Kindergarten ready. There are 15 seats available at each elementary school for this program. This program runs exclusively on Tuesdays, Wednesday, and Thursday beginning on June 17, 2025 through August 7, 2025 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Middle School (6th – 8th Grade)
At the middle school level there will be opportunities for learning and fun as well. Students who are in 6th - 8th grades can participate in an eight-week summer enrichment program which will provide STEM, SEL, math, and reading support on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon. from June 17 to August 7. The program will be held at Woodhaven High School and is run by WBSD staff.
High School (9th – 12th Grade)
High school students, 9th to 12th grade, will have the opportunity to participate in the traditional E2020 Credit Recovery program to allow students the ability to earn credits towards graduation. Students and families will be able to access additional information and sign up for the tuition-based E2020 program from their counselor.
This summer, we will also be providing Algebra 1A and 1B credit recovery. This program will be led by WBSD teachers and staff and will be in-person. To learn more, please contact the high school administration.
Another program offered this summer is the GM Student Corps Program. GM Students Corps is a paid summer internship program for high school students that offers community service, life-skill training, college readiness, and team building. For more information about the GM Student Corps program please contact Heather Fondaw, WHS Assistant Principal.
