Special Services Overview
Our district serves approximately 950 eligible special education students, providing a wide range of services including:
Academic and psychological assessments
Speech and language therapy
Teacher and behavioral consultation
Social work and nursing services
Academic support via collaborative teaching
Resource room and self-contained classroom instruction
Placement in specialized out-of-district programs
A dedicated team of over 86 certified professionals and 28 paraprofessionals delivers these services.
Eligibility Process
Eligibility for special education is determined through a Child Study Team (CST) process at the building level. This includes:
Review of classroom performance and prior interventions
Parental involvement in planning and decision-making
Further testing, if needed, to assess eligibility under state and federal guidelines
Development of an Individualized Educational Program (IEP) for students found eligible
All evaluations and services adhere to legal standards to safeguard the rights of students, families, and the school district.

Support for Children
The Woodhaven-Brownstown School District Special Education department provides services and support for children, beginning at age three (3), who have developmental delay(s) and/or disabilities.
If you have concerns regarding your child's development, you can request a comprehensive evaluation from our school district beginning at the age of three. Below are some common areas of child development.
physical (reaching, rolling, crawling, and walking)
cognitive (thinking, learning, solving problems)
communication (talking, listening, understanding, gesturing)
social-emotional (feeling secure, able to calm, playing with others)
self-help (eating, dressing)
