Early Childhood Development
The Woodhaven-Brownstown School District believes early childhood education, from birth to five years old is a foundational phase in a child’s life, laying the groundwork for their cognitive, social, emotional, and physical growth. It is during these years that children acquire essential skills and knowledge that will help shape their perspectives, abilities, interactions, and habits throughout their lives.
The WBSD recently added new early childhood initiatives to its programming.
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library
The Woodhaven-Brownstown School District has partnered with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to give the gift of books and instill a love of reading to children ages birth to five years old. Children who live in the WBSD are eligible for free monthly books through this partnership. Register here
Early On is Michigan's system for helping families of infants and toddlers, birth to age three who have developmental delay(s) and/or disabilities.
Early On supports and partners with families to promote the development of their infants and toddlers in developmental areas, such as:
• physical (reaching, rolling, crawling, and walking)
• cognitive (thinking, learning, solving problems)
• communication (talking, listening, understanding, gesturing)
• social-emotional (feeling secure, able to calm, playing with others)
• self-help (eating, dressing)
Early On partners with families, using their daily routines to work on supporting the growth and development of their babies. During the first three years of life, a baby's brain grows and changes dramatically. Early On emphasizes early identification and early referral to minimize delays and maximize developmental outcomes. Understanding your child's development may help you recognize if your child needs a referral. Early On Referral
Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP)
The Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) is Michigan's state-funded preschool for four-year-old children with factors which may place them at-risk of educational failure.
The Woodhaven-Brownstown School District now offers two GSRP classrooms to those who qualify. During the month of September, qualifying families registered, intake meetings were held with staff and home visits were made. With all the logistics in place, the two classrooms at Wegienka and Erving Elementary Schools opened for business.
